How are Dental Implants Different from Dentures

Tooth loss is a common issue that can make daily activities like speaking and eating difficult. There are now many treatment options available to replace missing teeth, two of the most widely used options are dental implants and dentures. Both are helpful in restoring the smile and improving oral function, but they are very different in structure, performance, and comfort. It is important to understand these differences to make it easier to choose the right treatment.

The following explains how dental implants are different from dentures in easy terms.

Dental Implants

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots that are placed into the jawbone. They are made of strong and safe material, like titanium. They are placed to support a crown or artificial tooth that works and looks like a natural tooth. Dental implants stay permanently and do not move or slip.

They do not cause any discomfort while eating or speaking. This feature makes them one of the most reliable and long-lasting tooth replacement options available today.

Dentures

Unlike dental implants, dentures are removable artificial teeth used to replace missing teeth. They are mainly of two types. Partial dentures, where only a few teeth are replaced, and complete dentures, where all teeth in the mouth are replaced.

They are not attached to the jawbone, which makes them removable for cleaning. They are made from materials like acrylic and are designed to fit the shape of the mouth.

Difference in Stability

Since dental implants are fixed directly into the jawbone, they are very stable. They do not slip or move while speaking, eating, or smiling. Their stability allows users to feel like they have natural teeth. On the other hand, dentures rest on the gums and depend on adhesives to stay in place.

Because of this, they may sometimes shift slightly, especially while eating hard or sticky foods. This stability difference makes implants more secure in daily use.

Difference in Comfort

Dental implants usually feel more natural because they are directly fixed into the jawbone. Most people do not feel any difference between implants and real teeth after healing. When compared, dentures may feel uncomfortable or bulky at first.

Some people experience soreness or pressure on the gums, especially during the early adjustment period. Over time, comfort may improve, but adjustments are often needed.

Difference in Maintenance

Dental implants are fixed and do not need to be removed for cleaning like dentures. They are maintained like natural teeth with regular brushing, flossing, and dental checkups. They need to be maintained well to keep them clean and healthy.

On the other hand, dentures require more care. They must be removed daily for cleaning. They also need regular adjustments or replacement as they wear out or the mouth changes shape.

What’s Better?

Choosing between dental implants and dentures totally depends on personal needs and budget. Dental implants are a better option for people who want a stable, reliable, natural-feeling, and long-lasting solution for their missing teeth.

Dentures are a good option for those looking for a quicker, non-surgical, and affordable treatment. A dentist can also help decide the most suitable option based on individual conditions.
